VEGVISIR. LAS SAGAS

Las sagas son narraciones, normalmente en prosa, producidas en la Edad Media y producidas fundamentalmente en Islandia. Sus antecedentes son orales y sus temas muy variados: sagas de obispos, reyes, caballeros, islandeses, arcaicas (sobre mitología), sagas de los tiempos antiguos, de los dioses, sagas de los proscritos y los poetas. A veces aparecen versos intercalados y los personajes son fundamentalmente noruegos e islandeses, aunque a veces aparecen otros escandinavos. Los personajes no suelen ser buenos o malos, sino que representan características propias de la naturaleza humana, se narran en orden cronológico con una detallada toponimia y suelen ambientarse en Islandia, Noruega o Groenlandia.

Caben destacar las Eddas, narraciones sobre mitología nórdica, que se dividen en la Edda prosaica o menor (también llamada de Snorri, pues fue escrita por el erudito islandés Snorri Sturluson); y la Edda poética o mayor, que veremos cómo inspiran una gran cantidad de temas de bandas de Viking Metal.

El uso de las sagas para fines artísticos no es nuevo, sino que el Romanticismo del siglo XIX ya estaba fascinado con la mitología en general y las Eddas inspiraron la poesía, sin embargo, los proyectos nacionales de Jacob Grimm o Richard Wagner, referidos a la cultura alemana, sientan sus bases en las fuentes islandesas. Luego fueron recuperadas por J.R.R. Tolkien y J.L. Birges para las tiras de cómic y las películas de Marvel.

Las alusiones a la antigua mitología escandinava son un referente para todas las bandas de Viking Metal. Dicha mitología se encuentra casi en su totalidad recogida en las sagas, que son vueltas a contar y reinterpretar, incluso a copiar literalmente a modo de letras para las canciones de las bandas.

• Por ejemplo, la banda Amon Amarth adapta las historias de la saga del martillo de Thor.
• Manegarn llevan la imagen de vikingos suecos en su mismo nombre, cogido de las Eddas, Mánagarmr es un lobo gigante que devorará la Luna durante el Ragnaröck.

Una de las sagas muy usadas, sobre todo, por Manegarn, es la de Ulhédinn, la saga sobre guerreros capaces de realizar grandes hazañas a través de la posesión por el espíritu de un animal.

Thryfing, el nombre de la banda, en sí mismo significa una espada mágica que se nombra en la Edda y en la saga de Hervarar. Esta saga es considerada de gran valor debido a calidad literaria,a que contiene información sobre las tradicionales guerras entre godos y hunos del siglo IV; además, la última parte es utilizada como fuente de la historia medieval sueca. También sirvió como fuente de inspiración para Tolkien cuando dio forma a las leyendas de la Tierra Media. La saga trata sobre la espadaTyrfing y de cómo fue forjada y maldita por los enanos Dvalin y Durin para el rey Svafrlami.

Grimnismál, del que ya hemos hablado en artículos anteriores, es uno de los poemas mitológicos de la Edda poética. Se narra a través de Grímnir, una de las muchas formas que adoptó el dios Odín, el cual, debido a un error, fue torturado por el rey Geirröd. Esto fue un error fatal ya que Odín provocó la muerte del rey, que cayó sobre su propia espada. Hay una banda danesa del mismo nombre, inspirada por esta saga, y que, aunque se de temática vikinga,  musicalmente hablando es muy cercana al Black Metal. Uno de sus temas recita:

En cuanto a Manegarm, su último álbum "Fornaldarsagor" (abril, 2019) entrelaza muchos elementos musicales, desde implacables ráfagas de metal negro, hasta los himnos vikingos y los interludios de violín suave en el medio. Se trata de un álbum conceptual que cuenta no solo una historia, sino muchas historias. "Fornaldarsagor" es un género de saga literalmente nórdico que contiene varias sagas antiguas con elementos sobrenaturales. Durante muchos años, los historiadores los han descuidado debido a su contenido sobrenatural, pero hoy en día son más aceptables para ellos porque son tratados como sagas míticas, más como la poesía nórdica. En este álbum, las sagas han sido la inspiración para las letras, aunque se cambiaron cuidadosamente las palabras pero no los contenidos. No obstante, el álbum es un álbum conceptual porque las letras están basadas en el "Fornaldarsagas" como material de origen. Incluso si las letras no son exactamente las mismas que en las sagas originales, los contenidos están lo más cerca posible incrustados en la música. En este álbum querían ir un paso más allá con las letras que antes y no solo contar historias sobre la mitología nórdica, sino contar las Sagas y mitos reales nórdicos que probablemente se intercambiaron oralmente en Escandinavia durante la era vikinga.

Rebellion es una banda alemana fundada en 2001 por Lulis y Tomi Göttlich. Su primer álbum, lanzado en 2002 fue un viaje de metal a través de Macbeth de Shakespeare. Después de eso, lanzaron un segundo álbum que incluía letras más estándar que se encuentran en el heavy metal: Metal, guerra, muerte, etc. En 2005, se embarcaron en un triple álbum de Historia de los Vikingos. El primer álbum se llamó Sagas of Iceland y utilizó las sagas por su contenido lírico. El segundo álbum, lanzado en 2007, se tituló Miklagard y se ocupó más de la historia y el expansionismo vikingos, tanto como el metal. El tercer álbum, lanzado en 2009, se llamó Arise - From Ginnungagap to Ragnarök y trata únicamente con los dioses nórdicos desde el principio hasta el fin del mundo. Veamos una de sus letras:

Amon Amarth es una banda sueca de la que ya hemos hablado anteriormente y con mucho detalle puesto que puede considerar el prototipo de grupo de Viking Metal. Dejamos hoy una de sus letras, extraída de la Edda prosaica (la muerte de Balder).

Einherjer fue fundada en Noruega en 1993. Su música es principalmente de Viking Metal, pero también tienen una buena cantidad de influencia popular. Como la mayoría de las bandas de Viking Metal, gran parte de su música vuelve a contar los mitos nórdicos y cada uno de sus álbumes tiene un tema específico. Se separaron en 2004, pero en 2008 anunciaron que se reunirían para hacer algunos shows en vivo en 2009. Uno de sus temas dice así:

Tyr también es una banda de la que hemos hablado extensamente; este vez, traemos una de las letras de su álbum "Ragnaröck", el que trata la mitología nórdica con más intensidad. Esta canción en concreto narra la captura de Loki:
